This is what scares me...

This is what scares me...... stepping on an Echidna shell or anything sharp for that matter! See links for the full story and also for an explanation of what an echidna is! They are a beautiful Native Australian mammal but not for patting or for stepping on an abandoned carcass on the beach... just admiring in the wilds or in a well set up enclosure in a zoo or wildlife park.

They sure are amazing animals but I wouldn't want to step on one of their spines either!

Aren't Aussie animals so different from the rest of the world. Echidnas are very cool. As for stepping on them - I'm with you, steer clear!

EEEEEKKKK!!! Sounds awful! I sometimes worry about standing on a crab that's just under the sand at the beach....but an Echidna?????? Oh boy, now I've got a whole other thing to worry about as well :O

Your beach encounter with an echidna was truly scary. We saw one at a beach just out of Moruya a few months back, crawling over rocks and over the sand. Last night I hear of one swimming in our river, about 100m from the river mouth! So beware the echidna on the beach especially if they have succumbed to a beach death. Ouch. You could have popped into our place just north of Moruya while you were on holidays.
